A way of life specific to the inhabitants of Hoerdt has developed around the cultivation of asparagus, creating a particular identity and a unique heritage on this land.
The cultivation of asparagus is certainly a labour-intensive job. It has established itself in the community of Hoerdt, not only because of the quality of the sandy soil, but also because of the determination and tenacity of its inhabitants. Indeed, their perseverance, discipline, high quality standards and the solidarity of the village have made it possible for the tenacious people of Hoerdt to face each challenge. Their desire for a job well done was strengthened by the plough and revealed the resilience of an entire population determined to face the difficulties of an extremely rigorous and demanding culture.
The cultivation of asparagus has given birth to a society steeped in tradition ; it has given rise to a sensibility, a soul that is unique to the village. With all its trials and tribulations, it has brought to light a unique attitude that underlines a sense of hospitality and the pleasure of sharing. It has given an entire group united by a strong social bond the ability to step back from their daily chores to enjoy an unforgettable celebration : the Carnival, the Asparagus Festival and the Messti are perfect examples of those moments when people celebrate in the village through some wonderful opportunities for sharing and socializing.
Traditions are rooted in time, thanks to a dynamic, rich and diversified network of associations, inherited from the collective dedication of the elders. It remains the pride of an entire village that is proud to be a place where the memories of yesteryear will be forever preserved for the benefit of future generations…
