The Asparagus Festival is an opportunity to revive old cultural traditions
THE ASPARAGUS FESTIVAL
For many municipalities, there are still traditional “village festivals”, events that have endured over time. Considering the importance of asparagus in the life of the village of Hoerdt, it made sense for it to organise its “festival” to celebrate its most famous local vegetable.
A village festival
The first “Asparagus festival” – Spàrichelfeschd – was organised in 1932 by the Hoerdt wind band. This was then broadcast live by Radio Strasbourg, a sign of the interest already being shown in it. It was so successful that the festival was thereafter held yearly, except during the Second World War.
A lasting festivity
Until the mid-1990s, the Hoerdt wind band continued to organise this highly symbolic festival every year.
In 1998, the Cyclo-Club decided to continue the tradition: it then organized the asparagus festival in partnership with the Agricultural Cooperative and a number of farms in the village.
The following year, the Asparagus Festival Steering Committee was officially created. This is now held on the second Sunday in May, whereas previously the date chosen differed from year to year.
This truly popular event is an opportunity for visitors to explore the farms and enjoy traditional asparagus dishes. Various activities are offered in the village to highlight Hoerdt’s agricultural, cultural and gastronomic heritage, in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
